A reduction of hearing can be provoked by various and different causes: it can depend on an alteration of the transmission of the sound in the external ear and in the medium (hypoacusis or transmission deafness) or by a problem in the ability of the inner ear to perceive the sound and to transform it in a nervous impulse (perceptive or nervous – sensorial
The most common cause of hearing reduction is the aging. The gravity of disturbance varies enormously from person to person and affect mainly men than women.
A type of deafness prevailing in the old person is the presbyo-acusis, due to the deterioration of the very small ciliate cells that cover the cochlear of the inner ear. These cells, which send sonorous impulses to the area of the brain that receive and elaborate the sounds, can be damaged also by incidents or exposure to very loud sounds.
Depending on the gravity, the hearing aid can solve partially or completely the problem. The choice of the type of aid depends on the nature of the disturbance, for which it is opportune to address to a specialist for its prescription and installation.
Sometimes, to support the hearing aid the audiology rehabilitation becomes necessary, constituted from auditory exercises and reading of the labial movement.
In the care job is necessary to be aware of the isolation risk for the deaf old person, helping him/her to have self esteem, using the residual abilities and to maintaining social relations.
It is necessary also to remember that the old person with sensory deficits pay particular attention to the body language (not verbal language).
