For older people or those with disabilities a number of services exist to make life easier, such as reduced bus and ferry fares and reserved parking outside one’s residence or in public areas.

 

As the carer of someone with mobility issues you are also entitled to a number of benefits, making it easier for you to provide the care which is needed.

Bus Transport – Reduced Rates For the Elderly

Elderly rates apply to persons over the age of 60 years and who are holders of the ‘Karta Anzjan’ Card or the E60+ resident’s card.

Passengers residing in Gozo are entitled to a 30 day ticket for the price of €10 to travel in Gozo only.

A Gozitan resident can also present a seven day or higher period ticket valid for travel in Malta to also travel for free in Gozo.

The Blue Badge Benefit – Permit to Park in Reserved Places.

The Blue Badge Benefit (PDF), commonly known as the Blue Sticker, is given by the Commissioner of Police on the recommendation by the National Commission Persons with Disability (KNPD).

 

The blue sticker entitles the person who owns it to park the vehicle in which they are travelling in public places reserved for persons with disability.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Persons who have serious and permanent mobility restrictions.
  • Persons who have a temporary lack of mobility that is expected to last more than a year.

 

Procedure:

To apply, kindly download the application form in the Apply for KNPD Services section and fill in the mandatory pages.

After an application is submitted and processed. Applicants will be requested to meet with a KNPD professional who will verify the eligibility of the person. Persons who are granted a blue sticker on a permanent basis will only have to attend one appointment. Applicants who are issued a temporary blue sticker will have to attend a second appointment with a KNPD professional.

 

Fee: Unique fee of €11.50.

Reserved Parking Spaces in front of the Residence of a Person with a Disability.

The Directorate of Traffic gives the benefit of Reserved Parking in front of private residence of persons with disability.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Have a physical disability requiring a wheelchair.
  • Have a serious lack of mobility as decided by a Board established for this aim by the Transport Authority in consultation with KNPD. (In some cases the service can be given to their relatives.)
  • Have a car registered with the address of the reserved space.
  • Live in the house in front of which the reserved parking space is reserved.
  • Are in possession of a Special Identity Card and a Blue Badge.
  • Do not own a garage adjacent with the residence or in the vicinity of their residence.
  • The parking bay can only be allowed as long as it does not obstruct the traffic flow.

 

Procedure: The Authority requests the opinion of the relevant Local Council before approving the benefit.

Keep Clear Bays

The Directorate of Traffic gives the benefit of keep clear bays in front of private residence.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Are in possession of the Special Identity Card and the Blue Sticker
  • Have a physical disability and use a wheelchair.
  • Do not have a car registered with the address where the space is being reserved.
  • Do not have a garage adjacent to their home.
  • The keep clear bay can only be allowed as long as it does not obstruct the    traffic flow.
