All care including care, residential care, adaptations to the home, respite and telecare is means tested. This means that many care recipients and carers pay for their own services.

In 2013 Carers UK undertook the Caring and Family Finances Inquiry to look at the impact of this role on carers. The remit of the Inquiry was to study the financial impact of caring, assess the impact of the changes to Government benefits on carers and to develop policy on reforming the financial support available to families caring for older and disabled relatives and friends.
