There are three main types of tax break available to carers:
Council Tax Support – is the way local authorities support people on low incomes. The eligibility and nature of the reduction varies in every local authority.
Disability Reduction Scheme – If your home has had work carried out on it to enable yourself or someone else with a disability to live there, you may be entitled to pay less council tax.
Council Tax Discounts – people who live alone qualify for a 25% reduction in council tax. In some instances a carer or people with severe mental impairments may not be counted when the council calculates the number of people living in a property.
A Disabled Facilities Grant may be available if you need to adapt your home to make it suitable for a disabled person.
Information about these breaks and support is available on the Carers UK website .
Winter Fuel Payment- available to those of qualifying age to help cover fuel costs, ranges from £100-300.
Warm Home Discount- provides discount on electricity bills to those who meet the criteria.
Cold weather payments- for people receiving certain benefits, you can be entitled to a cold weather payment for each week the weather in your area is at or below freezing.
The Carers UK website [http://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice/financial-support/help-with-household-finances/fuel-costs provides more details about each of these.
If you are receiving certain benefits you may be eligible for help with NHS health costs . The NHS Low Income Scheme is another avenue for assistance with health costs.
